Adoption Policies

Chesapeake Animal Control Unit may adopt animals to residents of Chesapeake as well as adjacent cities.  Any animal that is spayed or neutered may be adopted to citizens outside of the adjacent area.

The Shelter on Cook Blvd is open for adoptions Monday, Thursday and Friday from 11:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m; Tuesday from 11:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  The Shelter is closed Sunday, Wednesday and all holidays. 

All adoptees must complete an adoption application and be approved by the staff.  Adopters must have lawfully required rabies vaccinations and city licenses on any pets they currently own before adopting a new pet, present valid identification and if you rent you must provide verification that you are permitted to have a pet of the size and nature of which you want to adopt. 

Persons convicted of cruelty, abuse or other serious animal ordinance violations may not adopt. 

Presently the fee for dog and cat adoption is $40.00.  For small animals such as rabbits, small reptiles, birds, guinea pigs, etc, the fee is set administratively and you will need to inquire at the shelter at time of adoption. 

All dogs and cats adopted must be spayed or neutered.  The Chesapeake Humane Society assists with the spaying and neutering of our adopted pets.  Please inquire at the time of adoption for the current information, as the arrangements need to be made with CHS.
